World 233

During and shortly after WWII in World 233, high amounts of nationalism and economic devastation combined led to the rediscovery and romanticization of traditional costumes from the past. The desire for a unique national identity led to a global interest in the recreation of traditional cultural costumes to be worn in daily life.

By today, wearing traditional costumes from one’s culture(s) is the norm. There is great effort made to accurately recreate these costumes as they would have existed prior to modern industrialization, meaning many people buy patterns for traditional garments (rather than new clothes) and make them themselves with natural, handmade fabrics.

What if …

there was a resurgence in the wearing of traditional costumes in daily life?

Issue targeted:

Overconsumption, textile waste, loss of garment-making skills as public knowledge, poor quality of modern clothing

Inspiration:

Traditional costumes, medieval/fantasy trend of the 1960s-70s
